Im loving this organization and community... check them out

  • For two years, we offer housing, food, medical and dental needs, therapy, education and job training without charging the residents or receiving government funding.
  • Our six homes function without 24-hour live-in staff, relying on residents to create a supportive community, maintain recovery, and share household tasks.
  • Women come to Magdalene from prison, the streets and from across the Southeast and the country.
  • The women of Magdalene/Thistle Farms range in…

Disposable Workers

There is a passage from Olive Schreiner's 1883 novel The Story of An African Farm where she describes the isolated existence of the rural Karoo, with its “weird and almost oppressive beauty...the stone walled sheep kraals and kaffer huts.” This cursory and derogatory description of farm worker's dwellings is perhaps the only time they feature in the book. Rather, labourers and their homes are considered part of the farm's natural landscape and as such are rendered invisible and silent…

Hi Greg.

Will you be up in the Seattle area sometime soon? We've got SAS, and I'm a part of Students Against Slavery at UW, but one voice has always had a special place in my heart. I'd love to come support you sometime if possible, maybe hang out for a bit.

Greg,

My name is Justin Vorhees. I am a student journalist at the University of Washington doing a story about human trafficking and the local groups advocating and acting against trafficking in the Northwest. If you would be able to take some time for an interview over skype or some other medium I would greatly appreciate it. My E-mail is jvorhees@u.washington.edu. I check often.

Thanks for what you are doing.

Best,

Justin Vorhees

Hello greg,
My name is David Keaton and I am located in parsons Kansas. I am a youth pastor and friends with Andy Houltberg. We are about 2 1/2 hours from Kansas city and working with him on bringing awareness to human trafficking. I am also encouraging our youth to join in this movement. I just wanted to ask if it was okay to refer those I'm in contact with to this site and Just One? Primarily through facebook and events we have in our community. Thanks for all you do.

Thanks for the welcome! I was introduced to your site through Andy Houltberg.. met at a conference. I have been following the sex trade especially since witnessing it first hand in Cambodia. Been praying ofr the coalition there, and praying for how God might use me in Tampa to address the needs here.....any thoughts or connections in this area you can send my way, I'd be grateful.

Hello Greg. My name is Katherine Head and I work with David Long, who said you and I could do some very good work together. I was a photojournalist/editor for years, but had to get out due to the downturn. I've let my camera sit for too long, and now it's calling me to come back and do the documentary work that's in my blood. Human slavery, esp. the child sex trade, is something that I am compelled to address. I would like to start my journey here in Portland, and document some of the trafficking here. I live near 82nd, which seems like a hub for this sort of criminal activity. A lot of the so-called strip clubs are notorious fronts for more sinister things. I would love to take you out for a cup of coffee at the BiPartisan and pick your brain about where I should start and what light needs to be shed where. Eventually, my goal is to earn a fellowship and travel to India for a year, but I definitely need to start locally and help my own community. Any help you could give me would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you for all you do! Katherine
